Berea - Dactyloctenium Australe
Berea grass is native to the Kwazulu-Natal region. It is naturally found in sandy regions, the veld, as well as shady parts of the savanna. It is a creeping perennial grass that grows easily all year round. Bright and shiny green leaves and a shallow root system create a pleasantly spongy lawn texture. Berea has a medium growth rate and has a light green finish with a spongy texture. Berea needs to be watered regularly and performs best when left with some length on the blade (50mm to 70mm) so as to capitalize on whatever sunlight is available it also does well in the full sun. Berea has a medium traffic tolerance and like buffalo should never be mowed too short. As it is also a creeper it can be combined with a grass such as Kikuyu to fill in the shady areas. It is also a fast grower and although it slows down in winter it will still grow in this season. Keep the area moist at all times for the first two weeks. You may need to water more than once a day. Avoid puddles. Berea is a very soft bladed lawn grass that exhibits an incredibly high tolerance to shade, It has a similar root structure to buffalo grass.

Cynodon
Cynodon dactylon, known as Bermuda grass, is a grass found worldwide. It is native to Europe, Africa, Australia and much of Asia. Cynodon dactylon is a warm-season, prostrate, perennial grass; it spreads by scaly rhizomes and flat also form a dense resilient turf. It is a stoloniferous and rhizomatous creeping perennial grass with long prostrate stems (runners), rooting at the nodes. The upright shoots are 15-25 cm tall. A thick lawn naturally resists weeds and chokes out invasive plants as they sprout. Although weeds in it can make you want to reach for the herbicide, if you remain patient you can cultivate a lawn that throttles weeds and leaves you with a pristine yard. Grass is relatively easy to care for, especially if you give the turf attention a few times per year. By mowing, aerating, watering, and fertilizing your grass as needed, you can have the most vibrant, beautiful lawn on the block! Cynodon dactylon plays an important role in conservation, because it prevents soil erosion. It provides good grazing, is very useful as a lawn grass and is recommended for the protection of water ways. The best fertilizer for the grass will have an N-P-K ratio that's high in nitrogen, contains little or no phosphorus, and may include a small amount of potassium. For example, an NPK ratio of 16-0-8 contains 16 percent nitrogen, no phosphorus, and 8 percent potassium.

Kikuyu - Pennisetum clandestinum
The tropical grass species is known by several common names, most often kikuyu grass, as it is native to the highland regions of East Africa that is home to the Kikuyu people. Because of its rapid growth and aggressive nature, it is categorised as a noxious weed in some regions. Kikuyu turf is one of the hardiest, best looking, cost-effective grasses on the market. Home owners choose Kikuyu grass due to its high drought tolerance, excellent wear resistance and ability to maintain good winter colour. The downside of Kikuyu is, because it comes from a semi-tropical and warm climate, it cannot handle shade or semi-shade areas. It also needs more water than other grass cultivars, considering its fast-growing tempo. Kikuyu is best kept between 30-40mm throughout the year. Annual scarifying is necessary, best carried out between October and December. In summer, mow every 7-10 days. During autumn and winter, every 2-5 weeks, only if necessary. Kikuyu responds dramatically to nitrogen fertilisers. We recommend the use of slow release fertilisers such as Yates Buffalo PRO. The dense turf resists weeds, insects and disease.

Buffalo - Bouteloua dactyloides
Buffalo grass is native to short-grass and mixed-grass prairies and is an important year-round forage grass. Buffalo grass is less than 20 cm (8 inches) tall, with grey-green curly leaves. It spreads extensively creeping (horizontal, root-forming stems) and is drought-tolerant. It is commonly known as buffalo grass, it is a shortgrass found mainly on the High Plains and is co-dominant with blue over most of the shortgrass prairie. It is the only native grass that is also useful as a lawn grass. Buffalo grass lawns are warm season turf which is drought tolerant with better cold resistance than other warm season grasses. The grass is quite tolerant of a range of conditions and establishes with seed, sod or plugs. Its low stature reduces the need for mowing, eco system benefits are excellent, and a dense sod stabilizes soil for erosion control. Warm season grasses such as Sir Walter Buffalo grass go to seed when they are under stress. They develop seeds along either side and at the top of the grass blade that doesn't look as charming as the lawns we grow and love. If your lawn is seeding during these changes there is nothing to worry about.

Maintenance
It’s true that with artificial grass you can cut down on money (and time) spent taking care of your lawn. It is, however, important to remember to perform regular checks to ensure your artificial grass remains in great condition, year in and year out. We recommend that maintenance on your lawn takes place bi-annually – or at least annually – to ensure your artificial grass remains looking as great as the day it was installed. To this end, we have the Easi-solution: a maintenance contract.
